how to peel an orange

I watch you
peeling an orange –
how your fingertips
graze the
dimpled surface,
thumbs caress
the skin around,
brush across,
the slightly protruding
navel.

Nails biting
into the flesh
firmly before
you slide under
the edges,

peeling off
its outer layers, soon
scattered without care
across the table.

Each segment,
a finger slipped
into the crevice between,
stroked apart
until the orange
is in pieces before you.

Your artist hands
must feel
my kindred hunger-
press against my lip, open,
feed me.

Sweet juices fill
my mouth – I chew even the
bitter seed, savoring all
’til the end.

I’ve just eaten an orange – it was the last one or I’d be rushiing downstairs for another right now.
Then again, a crumpled old date has just returned from a weekend camping in the desert… 😉

Well, sticking strictly to dates, the fresh ones here are like nothing I’ve tasted before. They have the same thin sweet crust, but some have started to turn tacky and caramelly (sp?), while others are still soft, but crunchy and juicy at the same time.
Remind me to Fedex you some next April/May as I know I’d get that gift back ten-fold in your poetry!

🙂 They sound wonderful! I’ve only had them out of a box, and they are much closer to prunes…it sounds like both in taste and in affect. LOL However, I’m sure your camping date is yummy as well – although perhaps after a good shower!
